Database Backup

We've installed the Task Manager database on one of our servers that also has Backup Exec 9 on it. Do I need to shut down the Task Manager server prior to backing up the database? Is this a SQL database? Has anyone performed a restore of the server and database?

We strongly recommend you NOT to back up the database with Backup Exec 9 or other backup application that simply copy the file, as they can damage the database. We are going to add automatic database backup in the future. Yes, our database is a SQL database. At the moment you can use Firebird tool 'gbak' to backup and restore the database of our application. If you are interested, we can send it to you.

I would definitely like the backup tool. So do I need to exclude the whole Task Manager directory from backup? Are there any settings (users, permissions, etc) that are not backed up with the Firebird tool that I need to backup?

What about antivirus scans? Do I need to exclude the database directory from our routine A/V scans? We use etrust antivirus corporate.

Yes, you need to exclude Task Manager directory or at least databases (.gdb files). No additional settings to backup. The same with antivirus scans, exclude directory or .gdb files.
I sent the tool 'gbak' to your email address.
1. Save it to 'bin' folder of 'DBServer' directory (C:\Program Files\VIP Quality Software\VIP Task Manager Professional\DBServer\bin\gbak).
2. Go to Start -> Run and enter this line "C:\Program Files\VIP Quality Software\VIP Task Manager Professional\DBServer\bin\gbak" -B -V -user sysdba -password masterkey "C:\Program Files\VIP Quality Software\VIP Task Manager Professional\Databases\TEST1.GDB" "c:\Temp\db1.gbk"
3. Change 'TEST1' to your database name, "c:\Temp\db1.gbk" to the path where you store your backups.
4. Click OK
If you have any difference in the path in other case, make corresponding changes as well.

The command line backup seems to work well, I've added a script to perform this action prior to my daily tape backup.

How would I restore the gbk file?

1. Go to START
2. Select RUN
3. Enter line "C:\Program Files\VIP Quality Software\VIP Task Manager Professional\DBServer\bin\gbak" -C -V -user sysdba -password masterkey "C:\Temp\db1.gbk" "C:\Program Files\VIP Quality Software\VIP Task Manager Professional\Databases\db1bk.gdb"
4. Change the path if it is different, change db1.gbk to the name of your backup and db1bk.gdb to the name of your database (If the current database is active, you should use a name different from your current database, otherwise it will not be restored)
5. Register your restored database in Database Manager and see if it works fine.
6. If you need to give your restored database the name of original database, you should close the application on each computer in the network connected to it, rename the file .gdb and register it in Database Manager again.
