Supervision is a part of organization management. It is activity aimed to oversee productivity of employees in the group. Supervisor is a person who keeps an eye on the task progress of a group. He can decide whether the group is needed in additional resources, hiring new employees, training, assigning new roles and tasks, and other internal group regulations. Supervisor typically is highly involved in the group's task progress and he should be well aware of activities in the group, e.g., how to develop product, carry out service, optimize costs, etc. As to the personal characteristics, he must be flexible and rigid at the same time because during his activity in the group, he gets roles like couch, mentor or even advocate.

There are several main responsibilities of supervisor:

Identification of rules and policies.
Supervisor always must be sure that his team follows up organization's rules and policies, e.g. overtime, contact with press, confidentiality about organization information, etc. At the same time supervisor should also manage the team according to the procedures and policies of hiring, promotion, discharging, training, etc.

Staffing
Supervisor is responsible for hiring or firing of personnel. When a new vacancy in the group is opened, he sends request to upper management and adds all necessary information concerted to the most suitable candidate. Supervisor should ensure that new candidate meets all requirement and has adequate facilities, e.g. desk, computer, paperwork, etc.

Training and development
Supervisor is responsible for developing and introducing new training plans to his group. When supervisor sees that employees require to increase some skills to achieve group goals, he provides them with coaching and counseling.

Employee performance management
Supervisor is responsible for setting performance standards for tasks, projects and roles of the employees in his group. He must be sure that each employee has distinct and realistic goals. Supervisor collects ongoing reports on his employees' task performance. If he detects that some task and jobs are not performed adequate, he improve individual and group plans. He also sets a system of rewards and penalties if plan is accomplished or not.
